The customer, Kaustisen Evankelinen Opisto, is a school in Finland. The roof on one of their buildings needed to be replaced and at the same time, they wanted to try to lower their heating bills. They had been using heat pumps with geothermal boreholes for heating their two buildings. We replaced their old roof with a solar thermal collector roof, and installed our BTES to boost the efficiency of the heat pump in the larger building to reduce their heating bills.
This project was initiated during the R&D phase before Helistorage was founded. It was in collaboration with KS Geoenergi, our drilling partner, and was financed by ST1. This system acts as an efficiency boost of the existing ground source heat pump with installation being finalized in 2020.
Before installing the solar thermal roof, the old roofing had to be removed. The solar thermal roof was installed over a number of days, and pipework was fitted to the control room that houses the schools heat pump.
As there wasn’t much space available, only a small BTES could be installed. It was dimensioned to compliment the existing 7 deep boreholes.
Commissioned in the Spring of 2020, the site has been operational since. The smart controller software increases the efficiency of the heat pump by utilizing heat from the solar thermal collectors and storage, resulting in better COP with the connected heat pump than with the heat pump in the second building.
